IU – Spring of a Twenty Year Old Track Review
1. Peach (복숭아): The album has a sweet start with the song “Peach”. The song is filled with the scent of spring and expresses the tingling sensation of love in the beginning of a relationship. This theme is well expressed by IU as she is a young woman. The mix of lyrics and melody calmly express that feeling of looking at a lover and being completely content with it and not knowing what to do. The song also gives off a feeling of being confessed by IU herself and further invokes those feelings of being in love. In addition, IU included the triangle and recorder to emphasize the theme of innocent love.
2. End of the Day (하루 끝): “End of the Day” is the title song of the album. The two successful composers Park GeunTae and Kim DoHoon collaborate along with the lyricist Kim EeNa to create this piece to raise the expectations. “End of the Day” is an uptempo song that is reminiscent of old pop. This song expresses the feelings of a woman who loves someone, wanting the other person to know and desperately wanting that person to come to her first. “End of the Day” perfectly illustrates a woman in love who is so innocently desperate for a reciprocal. The impressive use of string instruments give a clear and bright atmosphere which mix smoothly with IU’s vocals.
3. I Hate Her (그 애 참 싫다): The last song of the album, “I Hate Her”, is a ballad song with a bit of R&B style mixed in. As the title may hint, the story is about a woman’s feelings towards her lover who will no longer look at her, but another woman. The bitter sounding acoustic guitar combines well with the weak-sounding voice of IU.
Although the album ends with a sad song such as “I Hate Her”, the Spring of a Twenty Year Old album completely shows the feelings that a girl goes through during her love life. The themes seem cliche but they are well expressed and performed by IU and her producing team.
