5+ K-pop idols named after schools: BTS V, EXO Kai, more

Every time a K-pop idol celebrates their birthday, their fan clubs in different countries tend to celebrate the occasion in the most unique and wonderful way. One of them is the establishment of a school in a given town, voivodship or city that would support children living there. What makes this school more special is that it is named after a K-pop star. Below are seven K-pop idols who have schools named after them in rural China and Africa.

1. BTS W

In December 2019, the Chinese BTS V fan group Baidu V Bar donated RMB 500,000 to build a village school to be named “Taehyung Hope Primary School”. Taehyung is V’s real name.

The uprising was established as part of the famous Hope Project, which aims to establish schools in poverty-stricken rural areas in China and help children whose families are unable to provide them with a full primary school education.

2. EXO Kai

EXO Kai is another K-pop idol who has a school named after him in China. His Chinese fan club, China Kim Jongin Bar, announced they planned to set up a school in a rural village in the mountains in December 2018.

The school was named “Kim Jongin Hope Primary School”, possibly in collaboration with the China Youth Development Foundation’s Project Hope.

3. BLACKPINK Lisa

To celebrate Lisa’s BLACKPINK birthday in 2021, her Chinese fan club LISABar raised funds to build an elementary school in Yunnan, China. This is to support and provide better education and facilities for more than 900 students in the province.

The primary school is named “Lixia Hope Primary School”. In Chinese, Lixia (立夏) is pronounced similarly to Lisa, and in Spanish it means “The Beginning of Summer”.

4. TVXQ Yunho

While the schools on our list were founded solely by fans, TVXQ Yunho himself contributed to the Yunho Education Center. The center is located in Bongo, Ghana and serves 200 students as of 2015.

The idol decided to team up with fans to make the school a reality after visiting Ghana in 2014 where he filmed a charity TV show.

5. YoonA Girls Generation

To celebrate Girls’ Generation YoonA’s 28th birthday in May 2018, her Chinese fansite Yoonaya collaborated with Project Hope to open a school called “Lim YoonA Hope Primary School” in southwest China’s Yunnan Province.

The school opened in September of the same year. Even after graduation, Yoonaya’s fan site regularly provides students with study materials.

6. EXO Lay

While most of the idols on this list have one school founded in their honor, EXO Lay has two.

The first, Zhang Yixing Bar Primary School, was built in 2015, and the second, Zhang Yixing Hope Primary School, was built in 2016. Zhang Yixing is Lay’s family name. Both schools were funded by EXO member XingPark’s fan group.

7. Super Junior members

The members of Super Junior have the same history as EXO Lay. Two schools were named after them, but as a group.

ELF global organizations have teamed up with Build a School in Africa to fund the construction of two schools in the country. One school is located in Tiogola and the other in Nimporodioula, which are villages in Mali and opened in 2016.
