Biden Opposes “Sick” Semi-Automatic Weapons and Unenforced Red Flag Laws on Thanksgiving Day in Nantucket

President Joe Biden has condemned the proliferation of semi-automatic weapons and the fact that some areas of the country are not enforcing so-called “red flag laws” designed to prevent people who pose a danger to themselves and others.

Mr. Biden made the remarks on Thanksgiving Day in Nantucket after he delivered pumpkin pie to firefighters. The president’s remarks came after a mass shooting in Colorado Springs that killed five people at Club Q, a gay bar, and a shooting at a Walmart in Chesapeake, Virginia that left six people dead.

“The idea that we still allow the purchase of semi-automatic firearms is sick,” he told reporters. “Just sick. There’s no social redemption value. Zero. Nothing. Not a single justification, except profit for the arms makers.”

The president also criticized the fact that some areas of the country do not enforce red flag laws. In Colorado Springs, police arrested Anderson Lee Aldrich, who is accused of killing five people at the Q Club a year before the shooting.

This was despite the fact that Colorado has widespread background checks and has a “Red Flag Act” that went into effect in 2020 that allows citizens and police to file an “Extreme Risk Protection Order” to prevent someone who constitutes danger to yourself or others.

However, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Department, where the alleged shooter was arrested, opposes the red flag bill.
