On December 5 local time, TIME announced the news in an article detailing Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa and Rosé’s achievements throughout the year. BLACKPINK is now the first girl group in the world to be named “Artist of the Year” by TIME magazine, as well as the second K-pop group after BTS in 2020.

While Jennie told the magazine that they are “very normal girls” at the end of the day, TIME reckons their 2022 will absolutely not be like that.

Last August, the quartet performed their hit “Pink Venom” at the MTV VMAs. They then embarked on a “blockbuster world tour” in October that will travel to 27 different cities over the course of nine months.
TIME pointed out that the group’s concerts over the last few months sold out in minutes and were attended by tens of thousands of fans, including stars like Selena Gomez and Usher.

Another reason why BLACKPINK TIME was named “Entertainer of the Year” 2022 is that the foursome’s second studio album, “BORN PINK”, released in September, became the best-selling album by a Korean girl group in history, with more over two million copies have been sold to date.

In addition, the quartet continues to dominate YouTube, where they have become the music group with the most subscribers, which so far have reached 83 million.

But BLACKPINK not only achieved so much as a group this year, but all four members individually as well.
TIME wrote, “You won’t achieve all of this by being like other pop groups. Most of them have a limited lifespan: they get old, burn out, or see one member rise higher. But BLACKPINK has managed to become the biggest girl group in the world. world by enabling its members to be stars in their own right.”

The magazine added that while the group may be “greater than the sum of its parts”, each of its parts is “greater than the combined efforts of most other pop groups”.
Previously, BLACKPINK was listed on the “100 Next List 2019” by TIME magazine. The foursome was hailed as a “phenomenon” and secured a place for their global influence and fan power.

On the Global 200 list, “Pink Venom” and “Shut Down” BLACKPINK ranked 94th and 180th respectively. On Global Off US charts “Pink Venom” and “Shut Down” peaked at No. 64 and No. 133, respectively. Lisa’s “MONEY” even made it to number 99 on the latter chart.
Additionally, BLACKPINK ranked No. 36 on the Global 200 Artists list and No. 25 on the Global Excl list. List of US artists (while Lisa placed 75th).
