Helen Mirren Says Former Liam Neeson Is ‘Amazing Guy’ But They Were ‘Not Destined For Each Other’

Dame Helen Mirren has opened up about her relationship with Liam Neeson, saying she still “loves him very much”.

The actors met on set while working on the 1981 film Excalibur and they lived together for several years. In 1986, their paths parted, and Mirren began dating her current husband, American director Taylor Hackford.

Reflecting on a relationship in a new interview with AARP magazine of which she is the December/January 2023 cover star, Mirren said she and Neeson “were not meant to be together.”

Mirren commented, sharing that sewing clothes is one of her favorite hobbies. Although she is currently fixated on making the perfect sarong, she also enjoys making men’s shirts.

When asked if she ever made shirts for Neeson, Mirren explained: “Oddly enough, I made one for Liam.

“We made love. We weren’t meant to be together this way, but we loved each other very, very much. I love him dearly to this day. He’s such an amazing guy.

After the split, Neeson married actress Natasha Richardson in 1994. The couple had two sons, Micheál, 27, and Daniel, 26, before Richardson died in March 2009.

Elsewhere during the interview, Mirren also reflected on aging and what she believes changes and doesn’t change with age.

“The thoughts you have when you’re 16, you have the exact same thoughts when you’re 76, which is very annoying,” Mirren said.

She explained: “Every year I make the same New Year’s resolutions: I will not procrastinate. And every year I put it off. I will be more communicative. And every year I’m not communicative. It seems to me that certain character flaws stay with you forever.

However, Mirren said in other ways that she had changed “completely”.

“I mean, I’m a completely different person compared to the person I was when I was 22 or 23. Even your skin changes. Your body is changing. What you think changes.”
