Henry Lau Update: Idol Status After Leaving SM Entertainment and Super Junior-M

One of Super Junior’s sub-unit is Super Junior-M, which is the first music group in the Chinese music market to have members of Korean and Chinese descent. Henry Lau was part of that group, but left SM Entertainment in 2018. It’s been four years since then, so let’s take a closer look at his current whereabouts.

Henry Lau’s controversial debut in Super Junior-M

In October 2007, Henry Lau was announced as one of the first two members of Super Junior-M, along with original Super Junior member Han Geng. Henry was a new member at the time, which caused the group’s fan club, ELF, to organize protests expressing their displeasure and opposition to the addition of a 14th member, fearing that one member from the original lineup would be “replaced”.

Five years later, Super Junior-M Henry debuted as a solo artist on May 30, 2013, becoming SM Entertainment’s first male soloist in 13 years since HOT Kangta. He released his first solo EP titled “Trap” which includes the title song (featuring Super Junior Kyuhyun and SHINee Taemin).

After 10 years with SM Entertainment, Henry Lau has decided to leave the agency.

Why did Henry leave SM Entertainment?

On April 30, 2018, SM Entertainment announced that Henry’s exclusive contract had expired and ended on good terms. They added, “Henry plans to set up a one-man agency to continue his business.”

The company did not specify whether the idol will also leave Super Junior-M. But years before this announcement, he was seen changing his Weibo profile bio to “Former member of Super Junior-M” in August 2016. At the time, it was assumed that his departure from MS also meant parting with the subunit.
