Kep1er is the newest girl project team formed as part of a survival program hosted by Mnet. They debuted on January 3 of this year with their first mini-album “FIRST IMPACT”, featuring the title track “WA DA DA”.

Kep1er consists of nine members, namely Yujin, Bahiyyih, Chaehyun, Dayeon, Yeseo, Hikaru, Mashiro, Youngeun, and Xiaoting. Among these girls, Hikaru and Mashiro are the only Japanese members and Xiaoting is the only Chinese member.

Once the three girls made their rookie roster, they stayed in South Korea for promotion, and are scheduled to operate there until July 2024 under a two-and-a-half-year contract.

After 11 months in Korea, where they had to speak Korean, one might wonder if they could still speak their native language.

In the latest episode of “The Will-Ben Show”, hosted by Sam Hammington along with his two sons William and Bentley, Kep1er Hikaru revealed if she still speaks Japanese well.

During an interview session, Sam asked, “But Hikaru, are there times where you can’t remember Japanese because you live in Korea?”

Hikaru replied that she was still learning Korean so she needed to focus on speaking Korean. But because he focuses so much on this language, he can no longer speak Japanese.

“Since I’m still learning Korean, I have to concentrate very hard when I speak Korean. I was so focused on Korean that I suddenly stopped speaking Japanese,” she said.

Kep1er Hikaru continued, “Even when I was on the phone with my mom, I couldn’t remember some Japanese words.”

Kep1er Bahiyyih chimed in and remembered the interview when they were in Japan and Hikaru answered questions in Korean.

Bahihiyih said, “Actually, when we went to Japan for an interview, she was speaking Korean instead of Japanese. So the host of the show seemed confused,” making everyone in the room laugh.

Meanwhile, in the same episode of “The Will-Ben Show”, Hikaru, Bahiyyih, William and Bentley played in “Kids Stars Athletics Championships”, a children’s version of Idol Stars Athletics Championships.

Kep1er enters TikTok year-end charts in Korea

In other news, Kep1er has been featured on many TikTok year-end lists in Korea. They were ranked fourth most watched Korean artist in 2022, making them the highest-ranked fourth-generation K-pop girl group on the list.

Kep1er was also ranked tenth on the list of Korean artists with the most new followers in 2022, making them the only second fourth generation K-pop girl group on the list, along with ITZY.
