UK live news: Dominic Raab facing new allegations of intimidation by ‘raft’ of civil servants

Dominic Raab faces accusations he has called Labor leader an aw***er

Dominic Raab faces new questions about his conduct as several of his former employees prepare to file formal harassment complaints against him.

The move is a coordinated effort by “a group of senior civil servants across multiple government departments” to raise concerns about Mr Raab’s behavior, including many private secretaries, reports BBC Newsnight.

Meanwhile, the program said it had heard allegations that a cabinet minister had used his personal email account for government affairs in two different departments as recently as last year.

This comes after senior lawyer Adam Tolley KC was appointed by Rishi Sunak to investigate two formal complaints about intimidation by the Deputy Prime Minister.

Downing Street has indicated that Mr Tolley’s remit may extend to other allegations against Mr Raab following a series of claims relating to his time as Foreign Secretary and his first stint at the Ministry of Justice.

Sunak warned that the Tories face an existential threat due to failures in building houses

Rishi Sunak has been warned by a senior Tory that failing to build new homes is an existential threat to the Conservatives after rebels forced him to delay reform planning.

Former cabinet minister Simon Clarke said the party’s vote could collapse if the government doesn’t help people climb the housing ladder with a building frenzy.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt acknowledged that people trying to buy their first home are struggling and said planning rules often pit “local communities against the national need to build more homes”.

Boris Johnson compares Liz Truss mini-budget to ‘a poorly played piano sketch’

Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson compared Liz Truss’ mini-budget to a badly played piano. In his first comments on the mini-budget, Mr Johnson told CNN: “It’s a bit like when I play the piano. The notes individually sound great, but they’re not in the right order or don’t come in at the right time.”

Johnson also rejected suggestions that he might return as prime minister. He said: “I’ve always said for about 20 years that my chances of becoming Prime Minister are about as good as the chances of being beheaded by a Frisbee, blinded by a champagne cork or locked in an unused fridge.

“I became prime minister then, so I think my chances of becoming prime minister again are those impossibilities cubed or squared.”

ICYMI: rise in private party gifts gives ‘super donors’ increasing influence over UK politics, report finds

A surge in private donations to political parties has left a small number of very wealthy individuals able to exert “substantial influence” on the political process in Britain, a new report has warned.

Nearly half of political donations in the UK – and 60 per cent in the run-up to the 2019 general election – now come from wealthy individuals, down from around 40 per cent in the early 2000s, researchers at CAGE Research University of Warwick have found.

Jeremy Hunt calls on the British to reduce energy consumption to stop Putin’s “blackmail”.

The UK needs to reduce its energy use by 15 per cent to defeat the Russian president, Jeremy Hunt has said.

The UK chancellor said: “Most people need you to play your part in reducing our energy dependence on what Putin decides to do in Ukraine. And that’s why we have this national ambition to reduce energy consumption by 15 percent.

Mr Hunt said that “eventually everyone will have to take responsibility for their energy bills” and think about how to reduce consumption.

He insisted it was important to stop Putin’s “blackmailing” of Britain.
